The
Rocca di Angera castle has a
defensive structure dating back to the Roman and
Longobard age, but it does not show real landmarks
of those ages.
Its walls date back to XII and XIII c. During
the time of the wars between the families of Torriani
and Visconti some changes were made. In 1277 after
the victory in Desio , the fortress was a property
of the Bishop of Milan, who was a member of the
Visconti family, then in 1449 it passed in the
hands of the Borromeo family who is still possessing
it. From the top of the tower a landscape of a
rare beauty can be admired. The “sala della giustizia”
is an important proof of the painting on ‘300:
on its walls there are some frescoes showing the
lucky adventures of Archbishop Ottone Visconti.
These frescoes date back to 1314 and underline
the shift from late Byzantine to Gothic style.

Lake Maggiore is well known for its colours and

In
front of Verbania the Eremo di Santa Caterina
del Sasso can be admired, you can easily reach
it by boat. It is a chapel dating back to XIV
c., its actual aspect is due to the works made
in the year 1500 which unified the three churches
creating a single building. The monastery is nowadays
cared by the monks of the order of San Benedetto,
and it is a religious, tourist attraction.
